SHORT FILM: HUMAN EVOLUTION (DEUS EX)

Posted in Short Films

Fan films are one thing, short films are another. With the budget here, and Machinima Prime behind the name, I can’t quite tell which one this is.

Deus Ex is a game series that debuted on PC in the early 2000’s. It had a big enough following from it’s initial 2 game releases that it was brought back in 2011 to much critical acclaim, and has spawned a massive rebirth for the series. The context of the 2011 game, “Deus Ex: Human Evolution”, is where the story of this short takes place.

There are plenty of things to love about the series, but this short has all of them. Human modifications have always seen their heyday in sci-fi action films, but never to the extent that Deus Ex goes to – and never with the effects that this short does so remarkable well.

Story, acting, action, and execution, this short takes the best of Deus Ex and puts it on display. It even manages to do it with some magnificent camera angles, too.

The short gives away a few plot points, but if you haven’t played the game, it stands on its own, regardless. And if you haven’t played the game, you might want to pick it up after seeing this.

Whether it’s simply a fan film with a budget, or an orchestrated release for promotional purposes, this short is one of the most well executed on all fronts. And it’s definitely worth a watch…I’m just sorry it took me so long to find it.
